Cooking With Kids: Andrew’s Favorite Oat Crackers
Encouraging kids to help in the kitchen doesn’t just keep little hands busy on long days at home. Discovering the joy of creating delicious things from scratch helps them build a healthy, life-long relationship with food. A lot of kid-friendly recipes are made from highly-processed ingredients, full of refined sugars, or are too complex for younger kids to make without plenty of supervision. That’s why this one’s a true family favorite.
Made from five wholesome ingredients, this kid-friendly cracker recipe is so simple a toddler can make it (almost!) all by themselves. From measuring to mixing, from rolling out the dough and cutting out the crackers with fun-shaped cookie cutters, Andrew’s Favorite Oat Crackers give even the littlest kids a hands-on cooking experience all the way to the oven door. And they’re delicious, too.
Ingredients
1/2 cup One Degree Organics Sprouted Spelt Flour
1/2 cup One Degree Organics Sprouted Quick Oats
2/3 cup nuts (your choice of Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, or walnuts)
2/3 tsp salt
1/4 cup water (add more if needed)
Directions
Using a food processor, blend the flour, nuts, and salt for about 1 minute, or until nuts are ground as fine as the flour.
Move the flour and ground nut mixture to a large mixing bowl and stir in the oats. Add water gradually until the mixture starts to come together, then gently form into a ball.
Roll the dough ball out on parchment paper to about 1/4-inch thickness, and use the paper to transfer the rolled out dough from the countertop to a cookie sheet. Cut the dough into cracker-sized pieces—Andrew enjoys using cookie cutters! Remove extra dough from around cut-out shapes, roll out remaining dough, and repeat until all dough has been used.
Bake at 350 degrees F for about 15-20 minutes, depending on how thin your cracker is, or until crackers are lightly golden around the edges. Serve crackers with your kid’s favourite dips and spreads, and let them do the scooping.
Store leftover crackers (if you have any!) in an airtight container for up to a week.
