Kathy’s Homemade Savory Granola

I love making my own homemade granola and experimenting with fun new flavor combinations in my kitchen. Like oatmeal, granola is a blank canvas limited only by your imagination—and it does not always have to be sweet! My Homemade Savory Granola recipe is just one of many ways you can turn humble oats, nuts, seeds, and seasonings into satisfyingly savory crunchy clusters to snack on.

Almost every granola recipe you find starts with a base of rolled oats (and sometimes quick oats, too). Then you add a mix of nuts and seeds, a small amount of natural sugar (maple syrup and coconut sugar are common), a little bit of healthy fat (like coconut oil or nut butter) to help the clusters hold together, and some spices, herbs, extracts (like vanilla), or seasonings to make it taste delicious.  Once you have those basics, any ingredient—sweet or savory!—that adds texture and flavor is fair game when you make your own homemade granola. The only rule? Use what you like and tastes good together to you (even if it seems strange to someone else!)

(That is how our new One Degree Organics Tea-Infused Granola line came to be—I thought about how much I enjoyed my favorite herbal teas next to my morning granola, and wondered what it would be like if I used those same combinations to flavor my next batch. And that is what is so wonderful about making granola in your kitchen! Because if you can’t find what you think would taste amazing together in a package at the store, you can make it yourself and create your own one-of-a-kind perfect granola, just the way you like it).

I used dried rosemary, salt, and garlic powder in my Homemade Savory Granola recipe here because it is a classic that never disappoints. But go ahead and use whatever dried herbs and spices you like! Then crumble it up to use as a soup or salad topper, or just munch on it as it is as a savory snack.

Ingredients

2 cups One Degree Organics Sprouted Oats (1 cup One Degree Organics Sprouted Rolled Oats + 1 cup Sprouted Quick Oats)
1 cup raw nuts (I used a mix of cashews, pecans, and almonds—but use what you have and like)
3 Tbsp sesame seeds (or One Degree Organics Flax Seeds)
2 Tbsp One Degree Organics Hemp Seeds
1/2 cup pumpkin seeds
1 Tbsp dried rosemary
3/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp garlic powder
3 Tbsp tahini
2 Tbsp maple syrup
1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice

Directions

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F.

In a large mixing bowl, mix together all the dry ingredients.

In a separate small bowl, mix together tahini, maple syrup, and lemon juice.

Pour wet ingredients into the dry mix and stir well, until dry ingredients are evenly coated.

Spread the savory granola mixture on a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake for 10 – 11 minutes.

Remove from oven and allow to cool completely (the mixture will harden as it cools).

Crumble cooled granola into bite-sized pieces, and store in an air-tight container.
